What is the PTE Academic?

PTE Academic is Pearson's computer-based English test, known for two things: it is scored entirely by AI, and results often arrive within 48 hours. That speed makes it popular with applicants working to tight admission or visa deadlines.

It is accepted by thousands of universities worldwide and approved for Australian and UK visa applications. The test integrates skills — many tasks test, say, listening and speaking together — and rewards clear, well-paced spoken English because a machine, not a person, is assessing you.

Because scoring is automated, format familiarity matters more than on most tests: knowing exactly how each of the 20 task types is marked can noticeably change your score.

Who needs the PTE Academic?

  • University applicants who want fast, computer-based results
  • Australian, UK and New Zealand visa applicants (PTE is approved for these)
  • Anyone who prefers AI scoring to a human examiner

Test format, section by section

Speaking & Writing · ~54–67 min

Tasks such as reading aloud, repeating sentences, describing an image, re-telling a lecture, plus essay writing — many marked for both content and oral fluency.

Tip: Speak at a steady, clear pace into the microphone even with other test-takers around you; hesitation and mumbling cost marks.

Reading · ~29–30 min

Multiple-choice, re-order paragraphs, and fill-in-the-blanks that also test vocabulary and grammar.

Tip: The 're-order paragraphs' task rewards spotting linking words and reference pronouns that signal sequence.

Listening · ~30–43 min

Summarise spoken text, multiple choice, fill in blanks and highlight-the-correct-summary tasks based on audio.

Tip: Note key content words as you listen — many tasks reuse them in the answer.

How the PTE Academic is scored

Results, validity & retakes

Results: Results are typically available within 48 hours.

Validity: Scores are valid for 2 years.

Retakes: You can retake PTE with no limit, though you may only hold one booking at a time.

How much does it cost?

Approximately US$200–300.

How to prepare: a study plan

  1. Learn all 20 task types and exactly how each is scored — PTE rewards format familiarity heavily.
  2. Practise speaking clearly and continuously into a microphone, ideally in a room with background noise.
  3. Drill 'read aloud' and 'repeat sentence' tasks, which feed both your speaking and listening scores.
  4. Time every practice task; the real test moves quickly and won't wait for you.
  5. Do a full scored mock to see your Global Scale of English sub-scores before booking.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Long pauses or self-corrections while speaking, which the AI reads as disfluency.
  • Ignoring grammar and spelling in writing tasks, which are scored even in short answers.
  • Not finishing the 'summarise spoken text' within the word limit.
  • Underestimating how much format practice changes the score.

How the PTE Academic compares

Compared with IELTS and TOEFL, PTE's draw is speed and AI scoring — no human examiner and fast results. The English level required is comparable; pick PTE if you have a deadline or prefer a machine-marked test.

How Oxford English Global helps

We coach the spoken tasks PTE's AI scores strictly — clarity, fluency and pacing — and walk you through each task type so format never costs you marks.
