Often when I meet new people and they ask what my occupation is I have to explain the concept of an English Language School. I accredit this with the fact that we live in a native English speaking country and don’t always realise how big the demand for learning the language really is. We are exposed to English every day and will most probably have it as a subject at school.
This is not the case worldwide as you are aware. But just how big is the demand for English? How many people speak the language globally? According to St George International in 2006 there was just over “a billion people in the world who could communicate in English to some extent.” Just over ten years later and the figure has jumped to more than 1.5 billion people.
“In 2015, out of the total 195 countries in the world, 67 nations have English as the primary language of ‘official status’. Plus there are also 27 countries where English is spoken as a secondary ‘official’ language.” If you consider the film industry you will see the domination English has as the accepted global language.
English is also the most useful language to acquire in the business world, followed by Mandarin. Being proficient in English as a second language could open up a whole new world to you. You will most probably have more job opportunities and be able to qualify for higher earning jobs. You will most definitely be considered for travelling opportunities as you will most likely be able to converse with colleagues from all walks of life and build up a network of international business contacts. As English is also the global language on the internet, you will be privy to information that your colleagues might not be.
All in all the advantages of learning English is endless. The demand is currently rising in countries like China, who has identified the need and is now teaching English in schools. This brings to the importance of quality English tuition. At Oxford English Academy we strive to enrich and educate English learners using the best materials and resources available to us. So if you have been considering taking the leap into the world of English, don’t think twice! We are here ready and waiting!
