Finally, summer seems to approaching Cape Town slowly but surely! As I have mentioned in previous blogs, summer truly is magic in the Mother City. Part of coming to learn English at Oxford English Academy is most definitely the social aspect of mingling with fellow students, our interns and newly acquired friends. As we now have longer, warmer days you will want to spend much of your time outdoors. Where you might ask? The beach of course!

All around Cape Town there are many beaches that you can choose from, depending on your preference you will surely have a favourite by the time you leave.

At the top of much of our currents student’s list is Camps Bay Beach. It’s close by and world class, with a strip of some of the best restaurants and bars lining the beach. From right outside our campus on Long Street you can take the bus all the way to the magnificence that is Camps Bay. There are umbrellas and beach chairs for hire and if you enjoy being seen with the top of the Capetonian and tourist crop, this is the place to go.

Just a short walk from here on the other side of a few boulders you will find the smaller and more sheltered Glen Beach. The beach is a favourite amongst locals as it gives you a little more privacy than its bigger counterpart next door. Glen Beach also tends to be a little quieter than Camps Bay and offers an incredible sunset!

If you feel like venturing a little further out of the city, Muizenburg is known as a family friendly beach with warmer water, as it is located on the Indian Ocean. Here you can laze around on the flat sand or get active and learn to surf. Gary’s Surf School has been up and running since 1989 and is well known by locals and tourists alike.

A mere 16km outside of Cape Town towards the West Coast you will find Big Bay. From here you will have an unbeatable view of Table Mountain while you soak up the sun. The beach is great for walking long distances as it is flat and stretches for miles. On windy days, you will be amazed at the amount of kite surfers frolicking in the waves. Keen to join them? Right off the beach you will find more than one school happy to teach you or rent out their equipment. Moyo, which is a lovely authentic African restaurant, has a branch located here and sipping cocktails there will truly be a memorable experience.

I have only mentioned a few options here and can assure you there are many other options to choose from and explore. So, when the sun is out get you gear on and take to the beach! Only once you have seen it for yourself will you understand what all the fuss is about.
